Video streams are initiated by the DW Spectrum server in the following manner:

  • send a single frame to the requesting client as a placeholder,
  • connect to the camera via hi-res stream,
  • connect via lo-res stream,
  • calculate best stream to use based on network stats
  • then send the video to the requesting client

The VLC player in Intelli-Site can timeout before DW Spectrum starts sending video. Digital Watchdog Support prescribes continually streaming from a camera to prevent this timeout. If the DW Spectrum server is licensed, setting the camera to record is sufficient. If it is not a licensed server, then they suggest setting the DW Client to continually stream from all important cameras. Unfortunately, we have found that the DW Client may stop streaming and not attempt to reconnect. It appears to be frozen. It can be restarted without issue but requires human intervention. This has been reported to Digital Watchdog and they are working on it. But, it is also possible for a hiccup in the network to occur that can cause the VLC player to report end of stream because it has received no packets within its timeout period. It is rare but possible. Therefore, when the VLC player reports any end of stream events whether it's during the streaming establishment process or during streaming, Intelli-site will query the DW Spectrum server to determine if the camera is online. If it is online, Intelli-Site will attempt to connect to it again. This will normally work because the Server has established a connection to the camera while the VLC player timed out. Understand that the VLC player timeout interval is 10s. It will take 10s before Intelli-Site is informed that end of stream has been reached so it can reconnect. As long as the DW Spectrum is connected to the camera and actively streaming, the connection process is quick. But if a connection to the camera must be made, it can take up to 20s total.

If one is having issues in Live View, one may need to click the Disconnect button or another camera button then click the desired camera button to attempt a reconnect manually. The video display screen object is triggered by changes in the camera counter.

If an error or end of stream is detected, the video display will show text explaining that an error occurred and to check the Exceptions report. This text only displays after a disconnect.
